What Is a Skill File? What Does the Resume Editor Do?
A skill file is a structured instruction set that tells your AI agent how to complete a specific task from start to finish. When you install a skill, your agent follows its workflow without you having to re-explain the process each time. You can read more about how skill files work at the Agent Skills specification.

What the AI Resume Editor Skill Does
The skill handles the full resume tailoring process in seven steps.
1. Gathers Your Inputs
The skill collects three things: your resume as a PDF or markdown file, the full job description for the role you are targeting, and an optional focus note if there are specific skills or experiences you want emphasized. If you already have a resume saved at Documents/resume.pdf in your workspace, the skill asks if you want to use that or upload a different one.
2. Parses Your Resume
The skill reads your resume and categorizes every section: contact information, professional summary, work experience with titles and dates, skills, education, certifications, projects, and any other sections you have included. This structured breakdown is what makes the tailoring precise instead of guesswork.
3. Analyzes the Job Description
The skill reads the full job posting and extracts the required skills and technologies, preferred qualifications, key action verbs, and the relative priority of each requirement. If a technology appears eight times in the posting, the skill treats it as more important than one that appears once. It also identifies the seniority level the role expects.
4. Tailors Your Resume
This is where the real work happens. The skill makes five specific adjustments.
First, it rewrites your professional summary to lead with the most relevant title and experience for this specific role. If the job asks for a "Senior Data Analyst" and that truthfully describes you, the summary leads with that.
Second, it reorders your skills section to put the job-relevant skills at the top. If you genuinely have a skill the job requires but did not list it on your resume, the skill adds it.
Third, it reorders the bullets under each work experience entry so the ones that match this job's requirements appear first. It adds quantified metrics where they are missing. "Improved system performance" becomes "Improved system performance by 40 percent." It mirrors the language from the job description for ATS compatibility and removes bullets that are irrelevant to this specific application.
Fourth, it integrates missing keywords from the job description naturally into your resume, but only where they reflect your real experience.
Fifth, it adjusts section ordering based on what the job values most. If the role is skills-heavy, the Skills section moves above Experience. If it is research-heavy, a Projects section gets added.
5. Applies Truthfulness Rules
The skill never invents experience, skills, or qualifications you do not have. If a required skill is missing from your resume, it adds a note calling out the gap so you can address it in your cover letter or prepare to discuss it in the interview. Employment dates and job titles are never changed.
6. Saves Two Output Files
The tailored resume saves to Documents/job-search/applications/ in two formats: a markdown version for easy editing and a PDF version ready to attach to applications. Both files are named by company and role so you can track which version went where.
7. Reports Improvements and Gaps
After tailoring, the skill tells you the top three improvements it made over your original resume, any skill gaps it identified, and where both files are saved. It also suggests pairing with the AI Cover Letter Generator skill to write a matching cover letter for the same role.
Who Is This AI Resume Editor Skill For?
People applying to competitive roles. When a job posting gets 200 applications, the ATS filters out the ones that do not match the keywords. This skill makes sure your resume speaks the same language as the posting, so it reaches the human reviewer.

Option 1: Claude.ai (web or desktop app): recommended for beginners
