You open Claude for the first time, stare at the blank text box, and freeze. What do you even type? Is there a right way to ask? What are all those buttons in the sidebar?
That is exactly where most people get stuck. And it is not because Claude is complicated. It is because nobody walks you through it. This guide does that.
I will cover how to set up your account, write your first prompt, and start using Claude's three most powerful features: Projects, Artifacts, and file uploads. You can get all of this done in under 30 minutes.
What is Claude AI?
Claude is an AI assistant created by Anthropic, an AI safety company. It is designed to help you write, research, analyze documents, answer questions, and build things, all through a natural conversation in plain English.
What makes Claude stand out is how it handles long, complex tasks. It can read and summarize an entire document, help you draft a full business proposal, or turn a rough idea into polished writing, without losing track of context. If you are curious how it compares to other tools, I break it down in Claude AI vs ChatGPT: Which One Should You Use in 2026?.
Step 1: Create Your Claude AI Account
Go to claude.ai and sign up. You can use Google, Apple, or your email address to create an account.
Claude has three plan tiers:
- Free: Access to Claude with a daily usage limit. Good for getting started and testing.
- Pro: More usage, access to Claude's most capable models, and all features including Projects.
- Max: The highest usage limits, built for heavy users and professionals.
You can see the full breakdown on Claude's pricing page.
If you are just starting out, the free tier is enough to learn how Claude works. You can upgrade once you are ready to use it more seriously.
Claude also has apps you can install. Download the desktop version at claude.com/download, or grab the mobile app for iPhone or Android.
Step 2: Get Familiar With the Interface
When you open Claude, here is what you will see:
- Chat window: The main area where you type messages and Claude responds.
- Left sidebar: Your conversation history and your Projects.
- Artifacts panel: A separate window that appears on the right when Claude generates a document, app, or chart.
- Attachment button: The paperclip icon at the bottom of the chat box that lets you upload files.
The interface is simple. Most of what you need is right in front of you.
Step 3: Write Your First Prompt
A prompt is what you type into the chat box. It is the instruction you give Claude.
Here is the mistake most beginners make: they type something too vague. "Help me with marketing" gives Claude almost nothing to work with. The more specific you are, the better Claude responds.
A simple structure that works every time:
[Role] + [Task] + [Details]
For example, instead of "write me an email," try this:
"You are a professional business writer. Write a short email to a client letting them know that a project will be delayed by one week. Keep the tone apologetic but confident. The project is a website redesign."
Claude will give you a polished email you can use right away.
When I first started giving Claude a role and specific details like this, the output quality jumped immediately. It felt like going from giving vague directions to a stranger to briefing a colleague who already understands the context.

Step 4: Use Claude Projects to Keep Your Work Organized
Claude Projects is a feature that lets you create dedicated workspaces for different topics or tasks. Think of each Project as a folder with its own set of instructions and memory.
By default, Claude forgets everything after each conversation ends. Projects change that. You give Claude instructions once inside a Project, and it follows them every time you chat within that Project.
For example, you could create a Project called "Content Writing" with instructions like: "Always write in a casual, friendly tone. Use short paragraphs. My target audience is small business owners."
After that, every chat inside that Project starts with Claude already knowing your preferences. You never have to repeat yourself.
How to create a Project:
- Click "Projects" in the left sidebar, or go to claude.ai/projects.
- Click "New Project."
- Give it a name and add your custom instructions in the knowledge base.
- Start a chat within the Project and Claude will apply those instructions automatically.
I go much deeper on Project setup, including ready-to-use instruction templates for five different business types, in the full Claude AI Projects guide.
Step 5: Use Claude Artifacts to Generate Documents and Apps
Artifacts are how Claude hands you a finished piece of work in a dedicated window, separate from the main chat.
When you ask Claude to write a long document, build a small app, generate a chart, or create a visual, the result appears in the Artifacts panel on the right side of your screen. You can see it, copy it, edit it, and share it all from there.
Here are a few things you can do with Artifacts:
- Ask Claude to "write a one-page business summary" and get a formatted document ready to copy into Word.
- Ask Claude to "build a simple HTML calculator" and it will generate working code you can download.
- Ask Claude to "create a bar chart showing these monthly sales figures" and it will generate an interactive chart.
Artifacts are available on the Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, and they work on the mobile apps too.
Step 6: Upload Files and Documents
Claude can read documents, spreadsheets, images, and more. To upload a file, click the paperclip icon at the bottom of the chat box and select the file you want.
Once a file is uploaded, you can ask Claude anything about it:
- "Summarize this PDF in 5 bullet points."
- "Find any inconsistencies in this spreadsheet."
- "Rewrite the introduction of this document to be more engaging."
This is one of the most practical features for business owners. Instead of reading through a 40-page contract or a long report yourself, you can upload it and ask Claude to pull out exactly what you need.
What to Do Next
You now have everything you need to get started. Your account is set up, you know how to write a clear prompt, and you understand Claude's three core features.
The best way to learn Claude is to use it. Open a chat right now and try this:
"Act as a business advisor. Give me 5 specific ways a [your type of business] can save time this week using AI tools."
See what comes back. Then adjust and try again.
